What’s all this Google Buzz?

Well...

1. Blends With Gmail

The main way of accessing Google Buzz will be through Gmail. Below your inbox, there will be a tab for Buzz, allowing you to read status updates, photos and video. The 40 people you converse with the most in Gmail and Gchat are automatically added as friends. Buzz updates also appear in your inbox if someone comments on your updates or comments, or someone directs a Buzz to your attention by using the familiar "@" symbol.

2. "Page Rank" for Status Updates

Google brought up that familiar criticism of social networks, that no one cares if you ate a bagel or stubbed your toe. To compensate for noise, Google Buzz lets you like and dislike status updates, and learn over time whether to show or collapse status updates from your friends. It also looks for conversations outside your direct group of followers and adds them to your feed as recommendations.

3. Media Gets Pulled In

Photos from Flickr and Picasa and video from YouTube appear as thumbnails in Google Buzz. Click a YouTube thumbnail, and the video will expand to play inline. Click on a photo, and it'll expand to fill most of the browser window, with the rest of the gallery in a narrow strip along the bottom of the screen. If you post a link in Buzz, you'll automatically be able to append images and the headline from that Web page. Finally, you can pull in tweets from Twitter (but no Facebook updates) into Buzz. Unfortunately, you can't send your Buzz updates out to Twitter or other social networks.

4. Mobile Features

Google Buzz will be available as a mobile Web app, letting you dictate status updates by voice and geotag your posts. When looking on Google Mobile Maps, Buzz updates appear directly on the map, so you can read location-based updates. You can also look for any recent Buzz updates posted near your current location.

5. Private and Public

With each update you send, you'll have a choice of making it private or public. Private updates can go to all of your Buzz followers, or just a select group. Public updates are posted on your Google Profile page and are immediately indexed for Google Search.

No gays on Mad Men

Major bummer reading about this today. One of my favorite characters is not returning to Mad Men. After having a male client make advances on his character, which were not returned, he gets the can AFTER the clients switches the situation on him and calls in a favor to his bosses that he doesn't want Sal on the job any more. When confronted by Sal's boss, Don Draper, he is let go even though he let's him know the whole story. Money talks and Sal walks. He packs his bags and we see he wander off - last seen near the park disheveled and in a fog.

Claims the Broadway Buzz...

Bryan Batt, the Broadway vet who made a splash on the Emmy-winning Mad Men as art director Salvatore Romano, won’t be returning to the hit show, according to TV Guide.

“I was supposed to be notified by December 31,” Batt told the magazine, “and nothing.” Sal was fired by Don Draper (played by heartthrob Jon Hamm) after resisting a male client’s advances on the October 11, 2009 episode, but the character’s future was left uncertain. Shooting for the show’s fourth season begins in March.

“We don’t murder people on our show, but for there to be any stakes, there have to be consequences,” Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner said about the loss of Batt. “I know how people felt about Bryan. I obviously love working with him, and he has been an indelible character since the pilot. But I felt it was an expression of the times that he couldn’t work there anymore. It’s the ultimate case of sexual harassment.”

Batt’s Broadway credits include understudying Albin in the 2004 revival of La Cage aux Folles, Saturday Night Fever, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Sunset Boulevard, Beauty and the Beast, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Starlight Express and Cats. Off-Broadway, he gave a memorable performance in Jeffrey and appeared in several versions of Forbidden Broadway.

So will Batt’s next move be a return to the Great White Way? “From your mouth to the producers’ ears,” Batt told Broadway.com in October. “There’s nothing like Broadway.”

Heidi Montag Surgery Controversy

Heidi Montag, star of MTV's The Hills has recently come under fire for undergoing 10 plastic surgeries in one day. Pretty crazy for a 23 year old.  Usually it is her crazy husband and wannabe celebrity, attention whore Spencer who does the outlandish, but not this time.

She was such a beautiful girl to begin with! The Hollywood machine is eating her up alive! I can only guess this is due to the pressures to look amazing and be the celebrity and paparazzi favorite she craves, but I think it's a case of no self esteem. I thought she looked younger before the Barbie transformation. Such a shame.

In lieu of the controversy, I founds this hilarious video spoof of her recent interview with Billy Bush of Access Hollywood.

Egypt Builds Steel Wall Along Gaza Border

gaza_tunnels_540Egypt has begun constructing a huge metal wall along its border with the Gaza Strip as it attempts to cut smuggling tunnels. When it is finished the wall will be 6-7 miles long and will extend 54 feet below the surface.

In researching a little more on this subject I found out some interesting facts, pictures and background.

These tunnels are not like the ancient ones that were used to hide royal treasure from tomb robbers in the Valley of the Kings. These are for smuggling goods and weapons due to border closings, embargos -  and defense or offense (however you look at it).

illustration of rafah tunnels
gaza_tunnel_cowCalves at one tunnel cost $600 each: $350 for the animal and $250 for the passage. Such smuggling is lucrative for smugglers and Hamas, which began collecting a $2,500 yearly license fee from tunnel owners.
They also say Hamas has begun to collect high taxes on cigarettes – a box of 500 cigarette packs that can be bought in Egypt for $700 sells for $2,000 in Gaza – in order to take control of that trade themselves.
Gaza-sheep-smugglingSmugglers demand $300 per rifle, which can be sold for up to $2,000 in Gaza. For every bullet, they get $1, a quarter of the Gaza market price. People can also use the tunnels to escape vendettas or police attention for $6,000.

eng_gaza_GB_BM_Baye_743160gThe Egyptians are being helped by American army engineers, who have designed the wall. Shrouded in secrecy, with no comment or confirmation from the Egyptian government, the wall should take 18 months to complete.

For weeks local farmers have noticed more activity at the border where trees were being cut down, but very few of them were aware that a barrier was being built. That is because the barrier, made of super-strength steel, has been hidden deep underground. It was manufactured in the good old USA and it fits together similarly like a jigsaw puzzle. It has been tested to ensure it is bomb proof, cannot be cut or melted - in short it is impenetrable.

A Fond Farewell to Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop is dead

Wow, yesterday it was news of Ed McMahon and now today two more stars pass - Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

It's sad that such a talent has moved on to the other side with so many unanswered questions. My thoughts go out to his three children and family. What an amazing entertainer, he will be missed!

Michael Jackson, the show-stopping singer whose best-selling albums -- including "Off the Wall," "Thriller" and "Bad" -- and electrifying stage presence made him one of the most popular artists of all time, died Thursday, CNN has confirmed.

Farrah Fawcett RIP

04-05-09-farrah_fawcett_swimsuit_poster_70sWow, after years of battling colon cancer, an American icon has passed.

This poster back in the 1976 established her sex appeal and status as a sex symbol for the rest of her life and introduced little boys and men to many a grateful image for personal reasons, ahem.  It sold 12 million copies!

One of the original Charlie's Angels, Farrah went on to make made for TV movies, big screen movies and even Broadway.

She married "Six Million Dollar Man" actor Lee Majors, whom she later divorced after nine years and has been with Ryan O'Neil since. She also appeared in Playboy in 1995.  Thanks for the memories!
