Saw this movie last night, another emotionally challenging one from Miramax that is called The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. All I can say is that hatred is learned. It still amazes me that a human being would treat another human being with such disdain and contempt that it results in the degradation, humiliation, pain and the eventual death that I witnessed. Time and time again from the Holocaust to Bosnia to Darfur we are made aware of that hatred and it scares me that we are capable of it.
Bruno is the wide-eyed innocent eight-year-old son of a officer in the Nazi party. He sees his dad as a soldier. When the family moves due to his position the resulting exploration in his surroundings and his heart are very powerful and moves the spirit. His encounter with another boy, who is behind a fence he believes to be a farm, along with his witnessing of the treatment of certain house help in the same "pajamas", adds to his confusion as to why they can't play together and so the drama unfolds.
Spying on his dad's business meeting one day he is spoonfed propaganda and a movie that the farm is a great place for all the inhabitants and his realization soon becomes as twisted and painful as the existance of his new friend. An inspiring story about friendships, innocence, and the fact that hatred and fear mongering are learned traits, no one is born that way.
